Every run begins and ends at a post, while corners and gates add structural posts. Panel width is a maximum module, not permission to ignore the site.
Draw the fence before counting
Mark each straight run, corner, end, gate, and change in elevation. Subtract gate openings from panel runs, divide each run by the allowed spacing or panel width, and round up. Combining all lengths before rounding can undercount posts where runs meet.
Field-built fences may adjust bay widths; preassembled panels are less forgiving. Confirm actual product dimensions rather than relying on nominal labels.
Gates change the structure
Gate posts carry concentrated loads and may require different posts, footings, hardware, or bracing. Count both sides of every opening and confirm swing clearance, latch location, grade, and access width.
Do the legal and safety checks first
Confirm property lines, easements, setbacks, height limits, permits, and homeowner-association rules before buying materials. Contact 811 before excavation and follow the locate instructions. A private utility or unmarked facility may require additional investigation.
