Larger sheets reduce seams but increase handling difficulty. The best layout minimizes joints without creating unsafe or impractical lifts.
Coverage is only the first decision
A 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet and a 4×12 sheet covers 48, but area alone does not select the better size. Wall height, framing direction, room access, stair turns, ceiling lifts, and the number of available installers all matter.
Lay out sheets so supported edges land on framing and butt joints are minimized. Stagger joints where the assembly guidance calls for it, and avoid creating narrow strips at corners or openings.
Board type follows the assembly
Standard, moisture-resistant, abuse-resistant, and fire-rated products are not interchangeable labels. Follow the approved wall or ceiling assembly, local code, and manufacturer instructions. Garages, furnace rooms, wet locations, and multi-family separations may have specific requirements.
Estimate accessories separately
Sheet count does not include screws, joint tape, compound, corner bead, adhesive, control joints, backing, or finishing tools. Finish level affects labor and compound consumption. Store panels flat, protected from moisture, and handle them with enough people or equipment to prevent injury and edge damage.
