An accurate order combines geometry with verified grade, separate thickened sections, supplier increments, and a placement plan.
Measure every volume
Break the project into slabs, footings, piers, steps, and thickened edges. Calculate each in cubic feet, add the volumes, and convert the total to cubic yards. Do not average unlike sections unless the dimensions genuinely support that shortcut.
Recheck form dimensions and base elevation shortly before ordering. Rain, excavation, and compaction work can change the volume after an early estimate.
Discuss the mix and delivery
Tell the supplier the application, specified strength, exposure, placement method, and any project requirements. Do not add uncontrolled water at the site to improve workability; changes should follow the supplier and project specifications.
Ask about lead time, minimum order, short-load fees, waiting time, cancellation, washout, and the smallest increment they will deliver.
Have a shortage plan
A modest allowance can cover normal base variation and handling loss, but it cannot rescue poor measurement. Know where a small surplus can be placed legally and safely. A cold joint caused by a shortage may be far more consequential than a small excess order.
